The rainy season is here!!

Around this time of the year, Japan gets super hot and humid.

-What is Tsuyu???-

You probably heard about “Tsuyu” already if you live in Japan. The rainy season (Tsuyu) refers to the period from late May to early or mid-July when frequent rain and cloudy weather are expected.

In Japan, this season is observed throughout the country except for Hokkaido and the Ogasawara Islands.

The timing of the start and end of the rainy season varies from year to year. The rain clouds and seasonal rain front that bring the rainy season move from the south to the north of the Japanese archipelago. Typically, it begins in Okinawa in late May to early June, and progresses to Honshu around mid to late June. The end of the rainy season starts in Kyushu and the Chugoku region, and then gradually moves northward to Honshu and the Tohoku region.

The rainy season brings “mold and bugs” so it is important to know how to cope with those matters. Here are some of our tips for you to get through this season 🙂

🔹Tips for the rainy season

-Use a dehumidifier

Utilize dehumidifiers or the dehumidify function on your air conditioner to manage humidity. Since the humidity definetely helps mold to grow.

**If you spot some mold in your house, try using “Kabi-Kira (mold-killer)” which you can easily get from any drugstores in Japan. It works wonders for those stubborn mold.

Also, using moisture absorbers is an effective way to control humidity. They are normally very compact and space-saving, so are highly effective in limited spaces.

This is one of the best moisture absorbers you could get out in town. In addition to the classic tank-type dehumidifiers, there are also sheet-style options designed for use in compact areas like closets and shoe cabinets. Some types even include insect repellent for added protection 🙂 So useful!!

-Use a circulator

Using a circulator can be beneficial for improving air circulation & reducing humidity as well.

There are the ones which are combined with a  dehumidifier so you can utilize it for drying clothes (Indoor clothes drying is common in Japan) as well. My recommendation is this one from Iris Oyama. The price is affordable but effective.

-Use a Futon /Mattress dryer

Since we sweat while we sleep, bedding is particularly prone to moisture buildup. So taking frequent steps to prevent moisture buildup is essential.

Here is my another recommendation:)

There are various type /size of dryers. You can dry out your futon with forced air and it helps you to sleep in the futon comfortably.
